Walter Joseph Koterwas, age 92, passed away on March 26, 2018 at Charlestown Retirement Community.  Walter was born on January 22, 1926 in Wilmington, Delaware.  He was the son of Vincent and Antoinette Koterwas and brother of 11 siblings.  Walter was a loving and devoted husband of 51 years to his late wife Helen (Strzegowski) Koterwas.

Walter (Wladyslaw) of Polish heritage, attended Holy Rosary School and graduated from Patterson High School.  Upon graduation, he joined the US Navy.  Walter graduated from US Naval Reserve Midshipmen School in 1945, commissioned at the rank of Lieutenant and served on the USS Gilbert Islands and USS Des Moines during his distinguished 12-year Naval career.  Walter went on to earn a degree in chemistry at the University of Maryland, College Park and a degree in chemical engineering from Johns Hopkins University.  Walter worked 42 years for the Baltimore City Department of Public Works and retired as the Bureau Chief.  He was responsible for the purification of the drinking water throughout Maryland.

Walter was a kind, generous man with a strong Catholic faith who loved his family and donated to various charities throughout his life.   Walter (Cutters) was also an avid duck pin bowler at Patterson bowling alley and supported his local sports teams including the Orioles, Ravens, and Terrapins.

His love and dedication to his family throughout his life created a strong bond with his four surviving children Dr. Christopher W. Koterwas and wife Emilia; Bonita A. Resop and husband, Leo; Mark Koterwas and wife Susan; Dr. Gary E. Koterwas, and wife Christine.  Walter loved and was proud of his 11 grandchildren Dr. Christopher M. Koterwas, Lisa (Muto), the late Dr. Jennifer Koterwas, Kristen (Marengo), Caryn (Zengel), Kaitlyn Koterwas, Dr. Jonathan Resop, Mary (Berrier), Samantha (Griffith), Elyse Koterwas, and Julia Koterwas. Walter was also honored to be the great grandfather of 17 great grandchildren:  Zachary, Austin, Cameron, Quinn; Isabella, Josephine, Michael; Patrick, Abigail, Macy, Elynor, Aliceanna; Caroline, Lincoln; Tara; Zooey, and Piper.

Family and friends will pray and honor Walter on Monday April 2 from 3-5 PM and 7-9 PM at the Kaczorowski Funeral Home, 1201 Dundalk Avenue, Dundalk, MD.  Please see www.kfhpa.com for online condolences and directions.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Rosary Church at 408 South Chester Street Baltimore, MD 21231 on Tuesday April 3 at 10 AM.  Please see www.holyrosarypl.org/en for directions.
