Nicholas Michael Stella, known to all as Nick or Pop, was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who passed away peacefully on October 24, 2024, at the age of 84. Born to Dominic Stella and Elizabeth A. Fernstein in Baltimore, Maryland, Nick was a cherished member of the community, known for his kindness, dedication, and deep love for family and friends.
Nick was married to his cherished wife, Charlotte "Cookie" Stella, for 64 wonderful years. Together, they built a life rich in love, family, and friendship. He was the devoted father of three daughters, Gina, Angela and Melissa, and caring father-in-law to Joe (Gina) and Chris (Angela). A proud grandfather, Nick leaves behind treasured memories with his grandchildren Julie (Craig), Zack (Sarah), Nick (Dani), Samantha (Chris) and Alli (Ethan). His legacy continues through his great-grandchildren: Brandon, Brianna, Faith and Glenn.
Nick is survived by his sister Millie and was predeceased by his brothers Joe and Frank and his sister Florence.
After a dedicated 30-year career at Giant Food, Nick embraced what he lovingly called "the best job of his life" caring for his granddaughters, Samantha and Alli. For 10 wonderful years, he would make them breakfast and see them off to school each morning, building a bond and memories they will forever cherish. Nick was Samantha's first student in her "pretend classroom" 20 years ago; although he wasn't the top performer on her spelling tests, he was always her favorite pupil. Known as a "jack of all trades, master of none," Nick enjoyed tinkering in his sheds, always fixing and creating something new. He found endless fun scavenging at the North Point Flea Market, bringing home all sorts of trinkets and treasures, many of which he and the family found good use for - though they'll now bring a mix of tears and laughter as they are rediscovered. It seems that along with fond memories, Nick may have left his family the cost of a 30-yard dumpster, as some of those trinkets actually served no purpose. In recent years, Nick enjoyed spending time with his friends at the Jolly Club playing cards and just hanging out. He also enjoyed having card games at his house on his state of the art poker table that he loved. He also loved his time at the family cabin in West Virginia, where he could often be found riding his quad runner, chopping wood, building a fire, and enjoying long conversations around it. Most recently Nick spent more of his free time enjoying a slice of something sweet on the swing on his back porch with Cookie, savoring quiet moments together.
A service to celebrate Nick's life will be held on November 9 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Luke's Catholic Church in Edgemere. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
